After not getting chance to do anything significant to the car over recent weeks I braved the cold today and got out into the garage to do some more work.
Having sent the master cylinder and servo away for refurbishment I was given the bad news that the master cylinder was almost certainly beyond repair. Apparently the bore is a very unusual size (typical Lancia I gather!) which meant that if couldn't be re-sleeved. Having honed the bore there was still some pitting so the choice was to hone again which might mean the bore was too large for the seals, leave it and hope it didn't leak past the pitting or buy a new master cylinder. I chose the latter as, whilst not cheap or planned within whatever budget I may have had in mind, I do want to ensure the brakes work well. The servo tested OK so was sent back to me without having anything done other than the test.
Today I fitted the replacement brake pipes for the ones mentioned in the previous post, managing to feed it around the front subframe without too much issue. They connected to the new balance valve and the flexible hose easily but I may need to tighten them more later.
I then refitted the servo and master cylinder with a new reservoir I bought at the same time as the master cylinder. All fitted OK and pipes reconnected but I will leave it without fluid for now as I need to get the front calipers reconditioned - once they are done I can fill it with modern brake fluid without having to worry about a mix of fluids.
I now need to torque the rear hub nuts, adjust the handbrake shoes and replace the seal on the fuel filler neck to tank connection and it can go back on its wheels. Then it is a case of getting it out of the garage to turn it round so I can sort the front end.
Target of using the car at the Harewood Hillclimb classic event in early June followed by a trip to Classic Le Mans in July is still possible, as long as I can get more regular work done!
