Not much to show for the work I have done today, I've torqued up the rear hub nuts and peened them into the slots on the axle so they shouldn't come undone.
Then adjusted the handbrake and seem to have one that works very effectively but will be interested to see how balanced it is.
The other job I have done is to replace the seal between the fuel filler pipe (which goes from the cap to the tank) and the tank, when I put petrol in the car a while ago it was dripping out. As the nut which holds them together is plastic and apparently easy to break I have sprayed it with penetrating oil on a few occasions. I bought a strap type oil filter removal tool so turning effort would be evenly spread around the nut and fortunately it came apart easily.
The old seal was in a really poor state, just a few bit of very perished rubber left so not surprising it leaked.
I'm going to get new tyres for the rear wheels before I put them back on the car, I realised it will be easier to sort them now and then do the fronts whilst I'm working on that end rather than sorting them all together later. Just got to decide what brand to go for - there are new versions of the tyres which were fitted originally (Pirelli Cinturato and also Michelin XAS) available but they are expensive so I might put something more modern on for now and look at changing them later. I'll report back soon.
